En 1900 desciende el Espíritu Santo sobre el Colegio Bíblico Betel en Topeka, Kansas pero no es hasta que William J. Seymour, un estudiante afro-americano, se traslada a Los Ángeles, California que empezaría el avivamiento Pentecostal. Por su predicación es expulsado de la iglesia que lo invito y busca al Señor en casa de un amigo. El es lleno del Espíritu Santo y su ministerio empieza a tener señales, prodigios y milagros hasta que mueve su naciente misión a un establo en la calle Azusa. Allí tendrían tres servicios del poder de Dios cada día, por los próximos tres años.

In 1900 the Holy Spirit descends on Bethel Bible College Topeka, Kansas but it’s not until William J. Seymour, an African-American student, moves to Los Angeles, California that the Pentecostal revival would begin. Because of his preaching he is expelled from the church that initially invited him and seeks the Lord in the house of a friend. He is filled with the Holy Spirit and his ministry begins to have signs, wonders and miracles until he moves his nascent mission to a stable on Azusa Street. There they would hold three services of God’s power per day, for the next three years.

Dado a la cercanía entre el barrio Hispano de la Placita Olvera y la Calle Azusa, muchos Hispanos experimentaron Pentecostés en Azusa. Pero para 1909 hay reportes que un grupo de Hispanos es expulsado de la misión. Estos solos se organizan y ya para 1912 esta registrada la primera iglesia Apostólica hispana en Los Ángeles en la casa del Pastor Genaro Valenzuela.

Given the closeness between the Hispanic barrio of the Placita Olvera and Azusa Street many Hispanics experienced Pentecost at Azusa. But by 1909 there are reports that a group of Hispanics has been expelled from the mission. These organize independently and already by 1912 the first Hispanic Apostolic church is registered in Los Angeles at the house of Pastor Genaro Valenzuela.

Robert McAllister, un ministro canadiense, predicó un sermón sobre el bautismo en el nombre de Jesús en este campamento pentecostal organizado unas millas al norte de Los Ángeles. John G. Schaepe, un pentecostal alemán, escuchó el sermón y pasó toda la noche pidiendo a Dios revelación. Arroyo Seco Camp Meeting
Robert McAllister, a Canadian minister, preached a sermon on baptism in the name of Jesus in this Pentecostal camp meeting organized just a few miles north of Los Angeles. John G. Schaepe, a German Pentecostal, heard the sermon and spent the whole night asking God for revelation. In the morning he went out shouting throughout the whole camp that he had received revelation about the power in the name of Jesus. This was the impulse for many to study and rediscover in the Bible the oneness of God.

Dado al crecimiento explosivo del mensaje Apostólico nuestros primeros pastores sintieron la necesidad de organizarse en 1925 para cumplir mejor con la misión. La primera convención fue celebrada en San Bernardino, California en 1925 donde los primeros acuerdos se tomaron en un espíritu de reconciliación y unanimidad. Y en 1926 en Indio, California se confirma y publica nuestra primera declaración doctrinal, el Catequista del Concilio Apostólico Cristiano del Pentecostés. Para 1926 habían ya iglesias en California, Arizona, Nuevo México, Texas y Baja California (México).  En 1927 se celebra la convención en Colonia Zaragoza, Baja California siendo la única convención celebrada en el extranjero.

First Conventions
Due to the explosive growth of the Apostolic message, our first pastors felt the need to organize in 1925 to better achieve the mission. The first convention was celebrated in San Bernardino, California in 1925 wherein our first accords were ratified in a spirit of reconciliation and unanimity. And by 1926 in Indio, California our first doctrinal declaration is confirmed and published, the Catechism of the Apostolic Christian Council of Pentecost. By 1926 there are churches in California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas and Baja California (Mexico). In 1927 convention is celebrated in Colonia Zaragoza, Baja California making this the only convention held abroad.

La Asamblea Apostólica tomó un paso histórico en el año 1929. En esta convención celebrada en Indio, California y con la elección del hermano Antonio C. Nava como nuestro tercer Presidente, se decide finalmente incorporar a la Asamblea Apostólica de la Fe en Cristo Jesús. Esta decisión se tomó con la bendición de las Asambleas Pentecostales del Mundo y marca el momento donde la Asamblea cambia de ser una asociación informal a una organización legal. Para 1930 se celebra la primera y a su vez sexta convención de la Asamblea Apostólica en San Bernardino, California.

Incorporation

The Apostolic Assembly took a historic step in 1929. In this convention celebrated in Indio, California and with the election of brother Antonio C. Nava as our third President, it is finally decided to incorporate the Apostolic Assembly of the Faith in Christ Jesus. This decision is taken with the blessing of the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World and it marks the moment where the Assembly changes from being an informal association into a legal organization. By 1930 the first and at the same time sixth convention of the Apostolic Assembly is held in San Bernardino, California.

Los fundadores no nos dejaron tomos extensos de teología, pero si se preocuparon por proclamar la fe y el mensaje apostólico prácticamente por los himnos. Tomando algunos himnos evangélicos, los Apostólicos desarrollaron una himnología única de ellos. Los tiempos eran crueles para los trabajadores Hispanos, entonces en estos himnos hay un realismo esperanzado frente las circunstancias. La primera edición de este himnario salió en 1931.

Hymns of Consolation

The founders did not leave us long tomes of theology, but they did worry about proclaiming the faith and the apostolic message practically through hymns. Taking some evangelical hymns, Apostolics soon developed a hymnology unique to them. Times were cruel for Hispanic workers and so in these hymns there is a hopeful realism before circumstances. The first edition of this hymnal was released in 1931.

Después del viaje en 1914 por la primera misionera apostólica, Romanita Valenzuela, se levantaron muchos predicadores del mensaje Apostólico en México. Para 1928 el hermano Nava aprovecha su visita a México para conocer las obras nacientes e impulsa a nuestro hermano Felipe Rivas Hernández a organizar la Iglesia Apostólica de la Fe en Cristo Jesús. Estos ministros recibieron cobertura inicial de la Asamblea Apostólica y para 1933 oficialmente se incorporan. El hermano Rivas junto a otros como José Ortega Aguilar y Maclovio Gaxiola son recordados en nuestra historia por su compañerismo y aportes.

Apostolic Church

After the journey in 1914 from the first Apostolic missionary, Romanita Valenzuela, many preachers of the Apostolic message arose in Mexico. By 1928 brother Nava takes advantage of his trip to Mexico to visit the new works and encourages brother Felipe Rivas Hernandez to organize the Apostolic Church of the Faith in Christ Jesus. These ministers received their first credentials from the Apostolic Assembly and by 1933 they officially incorporate. Brother Rivas alongside José Ortega Aguilar and Maclovio Gaxiola are remembered in our history for their companionship and contributions.

Hasta 1944 eran los acuerdos tomados en Convención General lo que regia a la Asamblea. Desde el principio se vio la necesidad de tener reglamentos escritos y bien elaborados, mas los fundadores tomaron su tiempo estudiando cuidadosamente una futura constitución. El comité de Constitución fue compuesto por Antonio C. Nava, Bernardo Hernández, Arturo Y. Hermosillo y por parte de la Iglesia Apostólica: Felipe Rivas, José Ortega y Maclovio Gaxiola. Ellos finalizaron sus trabajos y se ratifico en la convención de 1944 la Constitución y el Tratado de Unificación.

Constitution

Until 1944 it was the agreements taken at General Convention that structured the Assembly. From the beginning there was a need for written and well-developed rules but the founders took their time carefully studying a future constitution. The Constitution Committee was made up of Antonio C. Nava, Bernardo Hernandez, Arturo Y. Hermosillo and for the Apostolic Church (Mexico): Felipe Rivas, José Ortega and Maclovio Gaxiola. Finally they finished their work and the Constitution alongside the Treaty of Unification was ratified at the 1944 convention.

Cartas de hermanos en Nicaragua llegaban a la Asamblea Apostólica desde 1948. Se presentó la necesidad de enviar un misionero para organizar la iglesia. Fue comisionado nuestro hermano Leonardo Sepúlveda (1911 – 2006). Solo nueve meses después de su regreso de Centroamérica en 1952 nuestro hermano Leonardo Sepúlveda se dirigió para el país de Uruguay. Trabajaría los próximos siete años estableciendo la Asamblea Apostólica en Uruguay y Argentina hasta su regreso en 1960.

Letters from brethren in Nicaragua arrived to the Apostolic Assembly since 1948. The need became apparent for a missionary to be sent to organize the church. Our brother Leonardo Sepúlveda (1911 – 2006) was commissioned. Only nine months after his return from Central America in 1952 our brother Leonardo Sepúlveda directed himself to the country of Uruguay. He worked in the region for the next seven years establishing the Apostolic Assembly in Uruguay and Argentina until his return in 1960.

Carmine Cogliano, un inmigrante Italiano viviendo en Argentina escuchó el evangelio de nuestro hermano Leonardo Sepulveda. En 1962 decide regresarse a su país natal y establece con su familia la primera iglesia en Gesualdo, Italia. La obra prospera y ya en los setentas los hermanos empiezan a salir por cuestiones de trabajo del sur del país al norte. En 1970 sale nuestro primer misionero a España, el joven Richard Almaraz.

Missions in Europe

Carmine Cogliano, an Italian immigrant living in Argentina heard the Gospel from brother Leonardo Sepulveda. In 1962 he decides to return to his nation of origin and establishes with his family the first church in Gesualdo, Italy. The work prospers and already in the seventies our brethren go out due to work from the south to the north of the country. In 1970 our first missionary leaves to Spain, a young man by the name of Richard Almaraz.

Tarde en la década de los cincuentas se empezó discusión en la Mesa Directiva sobre la necesidad de crear un instituto para educación teológica apostólica. En 1965 se tomó el acuerdo de crear el “Colegio Bíblico Apostólico Nacional” en Hayward, California. Se inauguró en enero 1966 siendo el Presidente del Colegio Antonio C. Nava, Rector Eleazar Rodríguez, Secretario-Decano Demetrio Ramírez y Tesorero Manuel Vizcarra. El C.B.A.N. después ha estado en las ciudades de San José, California y Ontario, California hasta que finalmente, empezando en el nuevo milenio, se estableció un Colegio Bíblico en cada distrito. Para el proceso de acreditación se cambio el nombre en 2007 a ‘Colegio Bíblico Apostólico Internacional’ y su sede central que cubre tres distritos esta en El Monte, California.

National Apostolic Bible College

Late in the fifties there began discussion in the General Board about the need of creating an institute for Apostolic theological education. In 1965 the accord was taken to create the “National Apostolic Bible College” in Hayward, California. The C.B.A.N. was inaugurated in January of 1966 being the College’s President Antonio C. Nava, Rector Eleazar Rodríguez, Secretary-Dean Demetrio Ramírez and Treasurer Manuel Vizcarra. C.B.A.N. has later been in the cities of San José, California and Ontario, California until finally, beginning in the new millennium, a Bible College has been established in every district. For the process of accreditation the name was changed in 2007 to ‘International Apostolic Bible College’ and its Central Campus, which covers three districts, is in El Monte, California.

En 1916 fue cuando los hermanos Marcial de la Cruz, Francisco Llorente y Antonio C. Nava se juntaron para trabajar en el reino de Dios. Esto se tomó, en ese entonces, como el año del nacimiento de la Asamblea Apostólica. 1966 se declaró como “Año de Jubileo,” y en la Convención General de 1966 que fue en Phoenix, Arizona se hicieron grandes reformas a la Constitución, un gran festejo con aportes de todos los distritos y elección de nuevos miembros de la Mesa Directiva General.

The Assembly’s Fiftieth Anniversary

In 1916 was when brother Marcial de la Cruz, Francisco Llorente and Antonio C. Nava united to labor in the Kingdom of God. This was taken, at that time, as the birth of the Apostolic Assembly. 1966 was declared a “Year of Jubilee,” and in the General Convention of 1966 great reforms were made to the Constitution, a great celebration was held with participation from all the districts and an election was held of new members for the General Board of Directors.

Las cruzadas evangelisiticas y fervor chiliasta marcó este tiempo. El hermano Lorenzo Salazar tenia como uno de los lemas de su administración: Avivamiento antes del Levantamiento. Dios usó a muchos hombres por este tiempo como el Evangelista Gilberto Muñoz, quien tenia un don poderoso de sanidad. Carlos Ceniceros Jr. también resalta, un hombre de fervor evangélico, llamaba a los pecadores a salvación con su estilo único de predicación.

Evangelists & Crusades

Evangelistic crusades and chiliastic fervor marked this time. Brother Lorenzo Salazar had as one of the motifs of his administration: Revival before the King’s Arrival. God used many men during this time like Evangelist Gilberto Muñoz, who had a powerful gift of divine healing. Carlos Ceniceros Jr. also stands out, a man of evangelistic fervor, he would call sinners to salvation with his unique preaching style.

1971 fue el año en que el hermano Fidel Almaraz arribó a Puerto Rico. La iglesia allí crecería a tener cinco obras establecidas para el fin de esa década. Después en 1978 el hermano Fidel partiría para la Republica Dominicana. Allí plantaría mas iglesias fructíferas. En 2010 finalmente se plantaría la iglesia en Haití. Esta región ahora cuenta con mas de treinta iglesias gracias al ministerio apostólico del hermano Fidel Almaraz.

Missions in the Caribbean

1971 was the year brother Fidel Almaraz arrived to Puerto Rico. The church there would grow until by the end of the decade comprising five established churches. Later on in 1978 brother Fidel would leave to the Dominican Republic. There he would start more fruitful churches. In 2010 we would finally have a church planted in Haiti. This region now counts with around thirty churches thanks to the apostolic ministry of brother Fidel Almaraz.

Las primeras oficinas generales estaban localizadas en la ciudad actual de Whittier (antes conocida como Jimtown, California), que fue la iglesia del hermano Bernardo Hernández, de 1927 a 1935. Las oficinas serian movidas al hogar del Obispo Antonio C. Nava y su iglesia de ese entonces El Siloe en el Este de Los Angeles. En 1967 la Asamblea rentaría sus primeras oficinas en Los Ángeles y compraría en la misma ciudad en 1968 sus primeras oficinas administrativas. Para el comienzo de la década de los noventas el Obispo Presidente Manuel Vizcarra vio la necesidad de tener oficinas mas amplias y creó un comité pro-Oficinas Generales, un comité que tenia a los Obispos Richard Almaraz y Abel C. Jiménez. En 1993 La Asamblea Apostólica compraría y dedicaría nuestras oficinas generales presentes en Rancho Cucamonga, California.

General Headquarters

The first General Offices were located in the present city of Whittier (then known as Jimtown, California), the church of brother Bernardo Hernandez, from 1927 to 1935. The offices would be moved from the house of Bishop Antonio C. Nava to his church of El Siloe in East Los Angeles. In 1967 the Assembly rented out for the first time offices in Los Angeles and in that same city would purchase in 1968 its first administrative offices. In the early 1990’s Bishop President Manuel Vizcarra saw the need for larger offices and created a committee to purchase a new building, a committee that had Bishop Richard Almaraz and Bishop Abel C. Jiménez. In 1993 the Apostolic Assembly would purchase and dedicate its current offices in Rancho Cucamonga, California.

Gran necesidad se levanta en la iglesia para proveer a nuestros pastores y miembros que pasaban por necesidad. El Obispo Daniel Sánchez, trazó la idea de establecer el primer fondo fiduciario de la Asamblea Apostólica y la Mesa Directiva dio su visto bueno. La Fundación A. C. Nava existe para proveer asistencia financiera a pastores en necesidad, en tragedias repentinas, becas estudiantiles y atención de desastres. Muchos de nuestros miembros y pastores han sido bendecidos por este fondo y muchos mas estudiantes han continuado su educación por los medios provistos en estas becas dadas en cada Convención.

Antonio C. Nava Foundation

A great need arose in the church to provide for our pastors and members in need. Bishop Daniel Sánchez laid out the idea of establishing this first trust fund of the Apostolic Assembly and the General Board gave the go ahead. The A. C. Nava Foundation exists to provide financial assistance to pastors in need, sudden tragedies, student scholarships and disaster relief. Many of our members and pastors have been blessed by this fund and many more students have continued their education by means of the scholarships given out in every Convention since.

Escuela de Obispos

El desarrollo de liderazgo para nuestros Obispos y Misioneros es una prioridad en un mundo mas acelerado y conectado. Por esto la Mesa Directiva General comenzó la Escuela de Obispos en el año 2012. La Escuela de Obispo es innovadora en que junta al liderazgo misionero de nuestra iglesia en el extranjero y a nuestros Obispos distritales en los Estados Unidos. En el 2013 la segunda Escuela de Obispos internacional fue celebrada.

School of Bishops

Leadership development for our Bishops and Missionaries is a priority in an ever faster and more connected world. Because of this the General Board began the School of Bishops in the year 2012. The School of Bishops is innovative in that it brings together both the missionary leadership of our church abroad and our district Bishops in the United States. In 2013 the second International School of Bishops was celebrated.

A principios del 2013 la Mesa Directiva General convocó una Convención Legislativa Extraordinaria. Como en los veintes cuando nuestra organización se formó o en los sesentas cuando grandes reformas entraron a la Constitución, era otra vez justo revisar y hacer cambios al texto actual de la Constitución para el futuro. La Convención también fue marcada por un tiempo empoderado del Espíritu Santo en la Conferencia Nacional Juvenil.

Legislative Convention

The General Board in early 2013 called for an Extraordinary Legislative Convention. Like in the twenties when our organization formed and in the sixties when great reforms entered into the Constitution it was again fitting to review and make changes to the present Constitutional text for the future. The convention was also marked by a Spirit-empowered time at our National Youth Conference.

Escuela de Pastores

Existe una grande necesidad de entrenar nuevos pastores, fundadores de iglesias y misioneros. La Escuela de Pastores fue creada para entrenar hombres en las responsabilidades doctrinales, litúrgicas y pastorales de la iglesia. Compuesta de dos módulos, uno en California y el otro en Texas, el programa provee una reserva de candidatos listos para ser enviados a diferentes iglesias. Nuestro Secretario de Misiones Nacionales, el Obispo Joe Aguilar, esta a cargo de este programa.

School of Pastors

There exists a great need to train new pastors, church planters and missionaries. The School of Pastors was created to train men in the doctrinal, liturgical and pastoral responsibilities of the church. Made up of two modules, one in California and the other in Texas, the program provides for a pool of candidates to be sent out to different churches. Our Secretary of National Missions, Bishop Joe Aguilar, is in charge of this program.

Nuestro plan oficial misionológico comenzó en 2006. Inspirado por los patrones de crecimiento hallados en los Evangelios y el libro de los Hechos, el Obispo Ismael Martín del Campo presentó un plan de evangelismo centrado en grupos pequeños a la Mesa Directiva y la Convención. Ambas, la Convención y la Mesa Directiva, ratificaron este clan y continua dando resultados extraordinarios no solo en los Estados Unidos pero en el extranjero como en Argentina, donde el crecimiento se ha triplicado en los últimos tres años. Una iglesia en los templos y en los hogares, como Jesús y la Iglesia primitiva, es el futuro de nuestra Iglesia.

Strategy of Jesus

Our official missiological plan began in 2006. Inspired by the growth patterns laid in the Gospel and in the Book of Acts, Bishop Ismael Martín del Campo presented a small groups centered plan of evangelism to the General Board and the Convention floor. Both the Convention and the General Board ratified this plan and it continues to yield extraordinary results not just in the United States but also abroad like in Argentina where growth has tripled in the last few years. A church that is in the temples and the homes, like Jesus and Early Church, is the future of our Church.
